What we are actually recruiting this week

Live mandates, rebuilt from our own system every day. If a role here is filled by the time you read it, it drops off the page on its own.

Who runs your search

Someone who can read the statements

Patrick Johnson

A controller search and a CFO search look identical on paper and are nothing alike. One is about technical accuracy under a close, the other is about whether someone can sit in front of a lender. Patrick runs the finance practice across every industry we cover, and he will tell you on the first call which of the two you are actually hiring for.

What happens when you call

Four steps, and the days each one takes

Finance searches move fastest of the three practices, and stall in exactly one place: the second interview that nobody schedules.

Day 1 The brief System, close cycle, reporting line, and whether this hire is meant to fix the last close or the next raise.
Days 2 to 12 The approach Designation verified before anyone reaches a shortlist. A CPA in progress and a CPA are two different hires and both get told the truth.
Days 13 to 28 The shortlist [N] candidates, with the systems they have actually run, not the ones listed on the CV.
Days 29 to 42 Offer and close Bonus timing decides more finance moves than base salary. We ask about it in week one, not in week six.

Questions we get

Before you call

How long does a finance search take?

Forty-two days on average from brief to accepted offer. Analyst and manager roles close faster. CFO searches run longer because the board is involved.

Do you verify the CPA?

Yes, before the candidate reaches your shortlist. A designation in progress is disclosed as in progress.

Can you cover a maternity leave or an interim gap?

Yes, that is contract solutions. Different speed, different fee, usually a start inside two weeks.

What does a finance search cost?

[Fee structure, stated plainly. If we will not publish a number, say what it depends on.]

What if the hire does not work out?

[Guarantee period and what it covers.]
